The Durrells’ Pathway: A Unique Corfu Tour designed by Spiros Amerikanos’ Great-Grandchildren
For all fans of Gerald Durrell’s masterpiece My Family and Other Animals, we invite you to embark on a one-of-a-kind journey along “The Durrells’ Pathway”—a tour exclusively designed by us, the great-grandchildren of Spiros Amerikanos. As the descendants of the Durrell family’s close friend and trusted guide, we offer an insider’s perspective, sharing personal stories and rare insights that bring Durrells’ Corfu to life.
Our carefully curated tour takes you to the most captivating locations that inspired the Durrell family during their time on the island.
Stop 1: The White House in Kalami
We begin our journey on Corfu’s picturesque northeast coast, where we visit the White House in Kalami—the former home of Lawrence Durrell and his wife Nancy. They lived here for three years, and it was in this serene setting that Lawrence Durrell wrote some of his most significant works. We’ll take a relaxing coffee break while soaking in the breathtaking Ionian views that once inspired him.
Stop 2: Vlacherna Monastery & Mouse Island (Pontikonisi)
Next, we visit Kanoni, home to one of Corfu’s most iconic landmarks—Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island (Pontikonisi). Situated next to the Chalikiopoulos family lake, this area’s natural beauty made a lasting impression on the Durrells during their stay in Corfu.
Stop 3: Spiros Amerikanos’ House & Family Travel Agency
A special highlight of our tour is a visit to the former home of Spiros Amerikanos, now the site of our family’s travel agency. Here, we’ll take a rare look at original photographs from the 1930s, offering an exclusive glimpse into the real-life experiences of the Durrells in Corfu and their lifelong friendship with our great-grandfather, Spiros Amerikanos—the legendary taxi driver who played a crucial role in their story.
Stop 4: Traditional Greek Night at Taverna Tripa in Kinopiastes
To end our journey in true Durrell fashion, we head to the legendary Taverna Tripa in the picturesque village of Kinopiastes. This historic taverna, known for its authentic Greek atmosphere, was a favorite spot of Gerald Durrell and our grandfather, Michael Chalikiopoulos, where they spent many evenings in the 1960s. Here, you’ll experience a traditional Greek night, featuring a full dinner, local wine and live Greek music, just as Gerald Durrell and Michael once did.
